This morning as we were packing up to depart our overnight stay, one of the landing gear legs failed. It would no longer hold weight or retract into the RV. I happened to still be inside the RV at the time and quickly exited and moved away from the rig in case it fell over. When this leg failed the only things holding the RV upright were the tires in the rear and the other leg on the driver’s side.
Good news, it didn’t collapse. Chris was able to finagle the remaining leg enough and get the RV high enough that we could attach to the truck and negate the rollover risk.
While Chris secured the support leg with ratchet straps and bungees, I called RV repair companies in Twin Falls, Idaho, our closest town.
We were in luck! A repair shop was able to take us immediately. We pulled chocks and headed over. The repairmen were great. They diagnosed the problem within 15 minutes, called for a part, replaced the entire leg and had us on our way in 90 minutes. Chris and I are handy, but we never would have been running close to that timeline! The problem was a broken nut inside the leg that allowed the motor to move it up and down. With the nut sheared there was nothing connecting the gears to the leg. While repairable, the easiest and fastest fix was a new leg, and since one was available in town, we chose that option.
Back on the road, heading south and ready to relax on a beach. Fingers crossed that there is no more excitement before we make it there!
