While in Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, you feel that you can see him at every corner. This town that Mozart left in favor of greater and more lucrative music cities, embraces him and honors his life and craft.
We toured the house where he was born and first learned to play. It was a small place with only three rooms. Once the children (Wolfgang and Nannerl) were successful and helping to support the family, the Mozart family moved to a much grander place.
While in a city surrounded by the memories of this brilliant composer, we felt the need to attend a dinner concert with performances from three of his most popular operas. The five piece ensemble were dressed in traditional attire and the two soloists regaled us with songs from The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute. We loved the music and the audience participation, but we especially loved the ability to finally try the famous Salzburg Nockerl.
The main reason our travels brought us to Salzburg was the summer music festival. Jack had the privilege to attend the summer festival in 2019, joining his grandparents and the Borichevskys. He has been anxiously awaiting for the time that he could take the rest of the family around to see all the sights that captivated him.
Our final night in Salzburg ended with our attendance at the opera, Les Contes de Hoffman. The opera house was a beautiful sight, but Katie starring as all four of Hoffman’s heroines will live in our memories forever. During the first intermission we also experienced a Salzburg “must do” and ran to get espresso in an ice cream cone from Nur coffee down the road.
Salzburg was a magically city and we loved experiencing it with our family, but as always, we left some experiences as “to do later.” And that means that WE WILL BE BACK!
It was extra special to us that you were all there. 💕
