Racing Down the Queenstown Luge

Our luge visit began by going up a chairlift to where the track starts. If you have never heard of a luge I don’t blame you, it is similar to a box car, it has no engine and three wheels (two in the back one in the front) and a seat, that’s about it.

There is not a track exactly, or anything special to attach the cart onto, just a down hill road approximately a lane wide with dips and sharp turns to make it interesting.

There were two tracks, one had dips and a little tunnel at the end, and one had turns that if you weren’t careful could raise one of the luge’s back wheels! We saw a few people fall and one with pretty bad road rash after what must have been quite the tumble, but they all seemed in good spirits and were all wearing their helmets.

The training to ride a luge was minimal but required for anyone who was going to ride. We were told pull all the way forward to brake and keep it in that sweet spot in the middle to go fast otherwise pull the left handle to go left and the right to go right. After that we got a stamp on our hands and didn’t have to wait in the increasingly long line for the training.

We went down a total of six times, each time we road the chairlift up and had to run away from it at the top because that lift wasn’t slowing down for anything.

We had a lot of fun on the luge cutting each other off and racing, luckily none of us fell and hurt ourselves too badly, thought it was a bit scary to catch some air on some of the faster dips!
