We are off to Greece!
Check out of AirBnB – Check
Fuel up rental car – Check
Return rental car – Problem
The rental car company is claiming there is damage to the car. They claim that while the car was in our possession someone probably attempted to steal it and inserted a wrong key into the door lock that has now broken the mechanism. Our problem to the tune of $800
No worries (kind of) because we paid for the extra rental insurance through Discovercars.com. This insurance requires us to file a police report before they will take any financial action. Lucky for us I hate arriving Just In Time at the airport, so we had plenty of time to find the police office inside the airport and attempt to make a report.
The nice police officer (who I conversed with via Google Translator) informed me that according to Italian civil law only the car rental company (car owner) can make a police report for body damage. Sigh. I can’t get reimbursed from the insurance company without a police report, but I can’t file a police report because it is a rental. Well, this is a problem that I will continue to work on. Thank you to the US cops who took my calls and are helping me move forward!
Time to chill in the airport lounge, drink the free wine and have the kids do some schoolwork before we take Athens by storm! Chris still can’t say hi in Greek but he’s been studying food for a week!
Ciao, Italy. We had an amazing five weeks and we will overlook the final hour.
Rental insurance is a lifesaver, or at least provides some peace of mind.
Tell Chis to say “Yassou” for both hello and goodbye! Easy!
