Jiu Jitsu at SPI

Jack, trying to get free

While we are in South Padre Island, Jack and I have been attending Jiu Jitsu classes and having lots of fun. At the start of class, we warm up and stretch so we are nice and loose for practice.

Learning how to “shrimp” away from a person

One of the first moves we learned was the scissor sweep. It starts with someone putting someone else in the guard, then turning on their side and putting their knee into the other persons chest. After that all they have to do is kick and roll so that they end up on top. It’s no gi practice so we don’t have to wear the white uniform that we wore when we were in Jiu Jitsu in Hawaii.

We also did some drills. We had lots of fun jumping over blocks and kicking.
When we finished practicing the moves we played dodgeball. The first time we played girls against boys and the girls won. The second time we played the teams were picked at random and we played twice. My team lost the first game and won the second. We haven’t done Jiu Jitsu in about eight years (in Hawaii) and we were very out of practice. However, we learned quickly and it is very enjoyable.

  1. Aleah, how time has flown for Cici and me! It probably seems so long ago to you, but we remember going to a lot of the practices with you and it seems like yesterday! Your light blond hair has gone but your beautiful smile remains as does your adventuresome spirit and willingness to try new things……and revisit old things! Loved your combining the old and new ju jitsu experiences in your post, and the pictures are wonderful! I love “little you” and “big you”! 😘💕
