Hiking amongst History

It was a beautiful day, so we headed inland to a well known hiking spot.

Pantalica is a prehistoric settlement that was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2005. The civilization found here dates from 13 to 7th century BC.

All those black holes are tombs!

The main part of the settlement that is still visible is the cliff side necropolis that houses around 5000 tombs.

One of the tombs. They were sealed with a limestone slab.

The loop trail brought us up and down the valleys that surrounded the settlement. Our final stretch of trail led us to the road where we walked through a 200+meter tunnel and over a single lane bridge.

Over the river and through the woods

We loved getting out and experiencing our history in a different way, this hike was definitely a win all around!
