Culture & Food in Palermo

The home of the Palermo Symphony

Another region of Italy = another food tour!

We are only in Palermo for four days so I found a combined tour that allowed us to tour the markets AND the cultural sights of the capital city.

Our guide, Paola, has a degree in architecture and museum studies and was quick to immerse us in the history of the cultures that conquered Palermo over the ages. Palermo is known as the most conquered city in Europe and for a good reason. Its location at the center of the Mediterranean made it a strategic location to own and to attack.

We met our guide on the steps of the Teatro Politeama Girabaldi, which was perfect because we had tickets to the symphony there later that evening. I love scoping out locations before I need to be there at a specific time.

We toured the two main public markets and learned what a true Sicilian eats for breakfast.

Who has two thumbs and got used to this?

A special highlight for Chris and me was a stop at a 100+ year old coffee roaster. Of course we stopped in and bought some beans, we were running low!

We ate a lot, but that wasn’t the entire tour. We also stopped in to a marionette shop and learned about the historic craft of puppet making. Three generations have been making puppets in this small shop. We hoped to catch a show the following day, but unfortunately it was not to be. I guess we already need to arrange a return trip!

The final part of the tour was Aleah’s favorite, an artisanal gelatoria. Paola convinced her to try something different, a brioche stuffed with gelato.
