We boarded a train in Pompei to head to Sicily. A train is definitely not the most efficient way to get to the island, but it sounded like a fun way to travel! Our first train of the day was a quick 40 min ride to take us from our apartment in Pompei to a larger town south, Salerno.
When in Salerno we quickly changed trains and found our First Class car for the 8.5 hours to Sicily.
The ride to Sicily took us along the west coast of Italy and we loved every second of the beautiful scenic experience. Actually, not every second, there were A LOT of tunnels that not only blocked our view, but were also so small that the pressure difference caused by the train entering the tunnel at 100mph resulted in our ears popping, Every Time!
When we arrived at the “toe” of the boot our train drove directly onto a ferry. We were now sitting on a train that was riding on a ferry, crazy!
The ferry arrived in Messina, on the island of Sicily, and it drove off the ferry and we continued on our way to Palermo.
If you can’t tell, Chris and I thought this was pretty neat. The kids were not as interested.
