Who likes sweets? I know I do! We’ve had lots of fun trying all the yummy confections around Nice. We had ice creams, chocolates, candied fruit, and my personal favorite macaroons!
The places to get the sweets were also very nice. There was a flower market that was open almost every day and it didn’t just sell flowers! There were some very good fresh juices and even though they aren’t technically sweets I’ll still include them.
I only ever tried the passion fruit juice but my dad and Jack said the lychee and the strawberry ones were really good. There was also a place to get cured meat that we loved to snack on, again not really a sweet, but worth mention. The first time we went to the market I saw a candied fruit stand and, after a few days of begging, we got some! My favorite was the mango but there was also pineapple, melon, kiwi, hibiscus (the dried flower!). There was a wide selection of ginger, four different varieties, all tasting unique. One was super spicy, another burned as it went down the throat and the others I didn’t try, but my dad loved them all and eventually we had to go back so he could get a big bag with just ginger in it. Shops in the market were great but so were the stores all over the side and central streets. Very pretty little streets that were very maze like by design. We could hardly find our way around but did manage to revisit most of the yummy sweet places.
The shops had a variety of different smells. Some smelled like chocolate and one, that we went by almost every day, always had the great aroma of different types of tea.
It was usually fruity like orange or lemon but one time there was a strong mint aroma in the in the air.
The first bunch of macaroons I bought, I decided to share, which I will not say was a mistake but I will say that decision put a severe dent in the population of my macaroons. Evidently I’m not the only macaroon lover! There were a whole bunch of different flavors of macaroons. Two chocolates were both very good one was a darker chocolate and one was a Nutella like chocolate. Passion fruit was good but disappointing, compared to other passion fruit flavored things we’ve tried.
I surprisingly really liked the cotton candy flavored one, it was very sweet. Lemon was pretty yummy, we didn’t particularly care for mojito and raspberry was just alright.
Right next to the macaroon shop was a place to get nougat. Unfortunately for Daddy he’s allergic, because it usually has almonds. I didn’t have any of the nougat there or even in Nice. My first try of the sweet concoction was on a food tour in Barcelona. Surprise, it’s delicious, four out of five stars!
Right across from the opera house there was a chocolate shop which we eventually went in close to the end of our stay in Nice. There were lots of fancy
(in my opinion way overpriced) chocolate. Mommy bought a small box of sugar and chocolate covered orange peels. They were tasty but not worth it.
As the rhyme goes “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream,” though in this case I did not scream for ice cream nor did you, though I would have if it had gotten me more ice cream! Fortunately no screaming was necessary while eating the extraordinary flavors of the blissfully cold treat in the hot weather.
