This week we went on a audio self guided ghost tour. We found out a lot about Charleston and its ghosts!!! We saw the old jail and dungeon! We went to an absolutely terrible restaurant for lunch. It was called Poogan’s Porch because when the restaurant was bought by a family a dog was left at the front door. The family adopted the dog and named it Poogan. Poogan became the official door greeter of the restaurant. When Poogan died his ghost stayed at the restaurant remaining behind as the door greeter for many years after his death. The only thing good about the restaurant was the name and the fried Green Tomatoes which were okay, not the best, but okay.
Lavinia Fisher and her husband worked at a hotel. And one day they discovered that there customers often carried bags of money/gold and jewels hidden under their clothes. Lavinia wonted that money and she came up with a rather bad way of getting it. Their plan was to lure customers in with Lavinias’ good looks and once inside give them poisoned tea and if the tea didn’t kill them Lavinia would stab them in the middle of the night!!! Roomer has it that they even had a trapdoor installed in the beds so they didn’t have to clean up the bodies. As you might expect they became very rich and for many years their plan went on until a guy, that I can’t remember the name of, came to the hotel who unlike the unfortunate bodies in the basement didn’t drink the tea. He poured it out wile Lavinia wasn’t looking. This guy was clever, he didn’t seep all night so in the middle of the night he wasn’t in bed and heard a loud bang. Looking over to see that the bed was gone a long, dark hole in its place and hearing noises from the hallway he naturally jumped out a window. I think you can guess the rest of the story. He alerted the police and Lavinia and her husband spent their lives in jail. Lavinia still haunts the jail and hotel.
These are a few pictures of the menu of Poogan’s Porch
What was so terrible or couldn’t you find something you liked?
That’s too bad about Poogan’s Porch… I was going to recommend several Charleston restaurant we liked but when I starting looking for their URLs the first two had permanently closed. You might try the Yelp app, I don’t allows agree with other people’s opinions but the photos often can give you a good idea about the menu.
Hey Steve, food was actually great at Poogans. Service was weird with high pressure for drink and apps and serious attitude if we declined. Aleah hates most restaurants if it isn’t Chick-fil-A or have kraft mac and cheese. No accounting for taste.
Hey Chris, Poogans sounds like a number of place we tried in Savannah. I’ll have to check Poogans out if we visit Charleston again.
Super scary and intriguing stories Aleah! Thanks for retelling them for us!
